Positive Behaviour Plan

The basic expectations of students are that they: attend regularly (on time), complete all assignments and behave appropriately.  More specifically it is expected that all students will:

• Follow the directions of all staff
• Demonstrate considerations, courtesy and respect for others and their property
• Use appropriate language
• Remain “on task” and not disturb others
• Follow school rules
• Refrain from academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.)

Staff will intervene for any behavior that is interfering with the teaching, learning and or well being of other students and or staff.  The action taken will depend on:  the activity, target, intensity, duration and frequency of the misbehavior.  Consequences for misbehavior will include: warning/reminder, in-class timeout, out of class timeout, in-school suspension, out of school suspension and suspension with referral to the Board of Trustees.  Each teacher will establish appropriate classroom rules, consequences and reinforce this with their students at the beginning of the year.

In-School Suspension (ISS)

A small room is available in the school for those students whose behavior requires that they be away from their peers for a period of time.  In-school suspension is seen as a further opportunity for students to remain in school and attain their goals.  It is not used as punishment but as consequences of misbehavior.  During ISS students are given the opportunity to continue the given lesson or given new assignments, as appropriate.  Students who choose to use their time effectively will not “fall behind”.  Students who misbehave during in-school suspension will be required to leave for the remainder of the day or will receive an out of school suspension for the following day.

The possession and/or use of controlled substances, alcohol, and/or cannabis in school, on school property, on school busses or during school related activities is prohibited.  All cases of possession and/or use of controlled substances on school premises will be reported to the R.C.M.P. and shall result in normal suspension procedures.

Possession or usage of tobacco products is NOT permitted in school, on school property, on school busses or during school related activities.  Violation of this policy will be treated as a major offence.

Possession or usage of vaping devices and other inhalants is NOT permitted in school, on school property, on school busses or during school related activities.  Violation of this policy will be treated as a major offence.  

Other Toxic Substances

The use of toxic substances or any substance which is being used in an abusive manner is NOT permitted in school, on school property, on school busses or during school related activities.  Violation of this policy will be treated as a major offense. 

It is our sincere hope that all students will take pride in attending our school and demonstrate appropriate respect for the facility.  However, students and their parent(s) will be assessed for damage to school property or equipment.

Academic Dishonesty

It is our expectation that students conduct themselves with integrity in the classroom. 

Academic dishonesty including plagiarism and cheating will result in behavioral consequences such as redoing the assessment in the office, administrative intervention and potential suspension depending on the intentionality and severity of the incident.  

THE FOLLOWING VIOLATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED A MINOR OFFENCE:

• Not following the directions of staff
• Not demonstrating respect for others
• Not using appropriate language
• Disruptive behavior (anything interfering with learning environment) 

CONSEQUENCES FOR MINOR OFFENCES: 
(To be applied at the discretion of the classroom teacher)

1. REMINDER
   1. Unacceptable behavior will be identified – choice of behaving or moving to Step 2.
2. IN-CLASS TIMEOUT (5 – 15 minutes)
3. OUT-OF-CLASS TIMEOUT (15 – 20 minutes)
   1. In hall or “time out area” – choice of behaving or moving to Step 4
   2. Completion of Think Paper
   3. Parents are notified by teaching staff at Step 3 via Think Pape
4. IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION (Min. 1 hour/Max ½ DAY)
   1. Misbehavior here will result in OUT-OF-SCHOOL SUSPENSION
   2. Completion of Problem Solving Paper
   3. Parents are notified by teaching staff at Step 3 via Think Paper
5. IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION (1 to 2 DAY)
   1. Admin. review/counseling offered/verbal or written agreement to behave
6. OUT- OF-SCHOOL SUSPENSION (1 TO 2 DAY)
   1. Admin. review/counseling offered/verbal or written agreement to behave
   2. Meeting with student & parent(s) before reinstatement
7. OUT-OF-SCHOOL SUSPENSION (3 to 5 DAY)
   1. Admin. review/counseling offered/verbal or written agreement to behave
   2. Meeting with student & parent(s) before reinstatement
   3. If student repeats past Step 3, move to Step 8
8. INDEFINITE SUSPENSION
   1. Referral to Board of Education with recommendation for expulsion

PARENTS ARE NOTIFIED AT STEPS 4 TO 8 BY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION   

VIOLATION OF THE FOLLOWING IS A MAJOR OFFENCE

• Refusal to follow the directions of a school staff member (defiance of authority)
• Use of improper or profane language (or gestures)
• Fighting and physical abuse, or verbal abuse (towards student or staff)
• Willful destruction of property/ stealing
• Conduct deemed injurious to the moral tone or well-being of the school
• Destruction of property and/or misuse of office equipment, security, surveillance cameras, alarms
• Possessing or consuming alcohol or cannabis on school property or during school events
• Possession of or use of Tobacco/Vaping/Other inhalants on school property or during school
• Inappropriate use of division technology or personal electronic devices
• Possessing or threatening with a weapon
• Criminal acts
  
  

CONSEQUENCES FOR MAJOR OFFENCES:

1. IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION (1 to 2 DAY)
   1. Admin. review/counseling offered/verbal or written agreement to acceptable behavior
   2. If student repeats, move to Step 2
2. OUT OF SCHOOL SUSPENSION (2 DAY)
   1. Admin. review/counseling offered/verbal or written agreement to acceptable behavior
   2. Meeting with student & parent(s) before reinstatement
   3. If student repeats, move to Step 3
3. OUT OF SCHOOL SUSPENSION (3 to 5 DAY)
   1. Admin. review/counseling offered/verbal or written agreement to behave
   2. Meeting with student & parent(s) before reinstatement
   3. If student repeats, move to Step 4 
4. INDEFINITE SUSPENSION
   1. Referral to Board of Education with recommendation for expulsion

PARENTS ARE NOTIFIED AT EVERY STEP.

• The severity of the behavior may warrant one or more steps being omitted!
• Suspension occurs only after a student has chosen to misbehave!
• Steps may be repeated!
